John Scott was the first settler in the area, who was a maker of sheep and cowbells. With more immigrants moving into the area, the city soon became too be known as Scott's Prairie. Referring to this homestead, neighbors started to jokingly call it Green Forest. The name caught on and the town was officially incorporated in 1955.
